I saw a post by Mike Mackenzie in 07 about him making an older
post about how to create a 3d engraving file in Corel Draw. Searched the forum and google but could not find the earlier post.

Anyone know that link...or have any tips on using Corel Draw to create
artwork for 3D engraving. I have a sheet of Delrin and could use
some tips on bitmap gradient shading to get 3D.

Thanks

Have you read Dee's post three down from you message? http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=116246

Yes, I checked Dee's post and then went to the link that said it had
art files from Corel. But all I could find was thumbnails of the finished projects, not the corel files that would show the shading.

Maybe I missed them?

Hey Thanks...that takes skill and knowledge to master the
art of the gradients.

I like Chinese papercut art and have found a good source
at baidu.com. Search 剪纸

The art is very easy to vectorize because its red on white.

Great artwork.. Dee!

Len,

If you PM me your e-mail I will send you a pdf with the instructions. The file is over 8mb so I can not post it here.

The tip about using the gamma adjustment helps a lot.
Seemed like the countouring final image was coming out
kind of dark, so the gamma helps lighten it up giving a
more consistent gradient.

Also tried making all the 3D parts of the design as white.
Then only engraving the black lowest background parts
to a desired depth. Then removing the black background
and working the contoured parts down at multiple paths
to get to a desired depth that looks good against the
already deep background areas. Using the machine as
a sculpting tool. Also adjusting the light and darkness
of the contouring to adjust the shape along the way.

Fairly time consuming but results are very good. I imagine
if you had a very high watt laser, a high resolution lense,
good knowledge of bas -relief you could get results similar
to using artcam software and a cnc machine.
