what is the best way to get an even stain on ash face and end grain?

Ash can be a challenge unless you are staying quite light. I got some reasonable results by sanding faces to 220 and end grain through 400. I doubt I'll ever try a dark color on ash again although I like the material.

Use a water Dye. Once you use dye you will never go back to stain.

Another trick... is to sand as you suggested, then wipe the endgrain with mineral spirits and while it's still wet with the MS add your stain, it will come out close to the face grain color.

Dye is another good option.

You can also shellac the ends, let dry, stain.
