I bought a Jet 1014 with the intention of following Mark Kauder's article and converting it to variable speed via a DC motor and converter. Since my tools are gone except for the lathe and a DeWalt scroll saw, I did the conversion in a somewhat crude way since after my house sells I will be moving and will need to dismantle the lathe in order to ship it. Also I don't have a vice to hold things to do precise work.
I am including three pic showing the conversion which was completed on Subday. The first pic is a front right view. Unlike Mark I elected to keep the original switch and only have the speed control knob on the stalk. The unfinished walnut control box doesn't show up well.

The second pic is a back left view and again the speed control box doesn't show up well. I made a little walnut hanger to bring the power/switch cord down outside the ways to the stalk base,

The third shot is from left front which allows the cooling fan on end of the motor box to be seen. I ordered the fan on ebay and was disappoimted that it had to be mounted outside the box. It does the job though. I still need to put a filter over it. I have cut out a little wooden plate to hold the material.

I am pleased with the conversion and it is really nice to be able to slow a turning down to the right speed for sanding. I would write more but I am having fits with mouse right now. It keeps hanging up and I have to shut down and reboot losing all the work I have going when it happens.
