I posted the other day about a drill press that I found behind a machine shop. I asked & they let me take it

This thing is pretty cool. It has a 600V motor setup - is that the same as 3 phase or something completely different?

It also has an elecric power feeder to work the spindle. I have not looked closely - but if I can somehow get this working Maybe I can use it for an oscillating sander setup also - we'll see.

Everything spins & moves pretty freely so I'm pretty sure I'll have a heavy duty drill press for FREE if my 1/2 HP motor works OK.

I have a 1/2 HP 110 motor I'm going to swap in & see if it is powerful enough - the consensus seems to be that it will be.

Anyway I said I'd post pics so I borrowed the digital camera from work & here they are. I don't want to unload it by myself & unfortunately it rained last night so it got a little wet. I'll bring it in tomorrow & wipe it all down with wd40.

If you want to see more pics I posted them here it might load a little slow - I didn't take much time to format everything:

I think the spindle feed will be pretty slow for a sander feed, but I've not used one like that.

Tom, it looks like it will do the trick..............and you can't beat the price! Being that this was in a Commercial Machine Shop, the 600V Motor is probably a 3 Phase Motor. Most all Lathes and Vertical/Horizontal Mills are 3 phase, and they utilize a terminal block to wire it for varying voltages. The 120V Motor should do just fine on this unit. As far as the quill feed unit, it may be 3 phase as well, but if it has a Schematic somewhere inside the cover, you may be able to wire it to your 120V power source. Most of these feed accessories, like a DRO on a Metal Lathe, are 120V, but not all. Without looking at the Terminal Block in the Feed Unit, it is hard to tell if it can be wired 120V. Even without that feature, the Drill Press should do the job for you. It's gonna take one HEAVY DUTY bench to support that monster! You ARE going to get help getting it out of the truck and set up aren't you? Just had to ask! Take care of the Back, like momma said..........."You only got one!"

Tom,

That is a 3 phase motor. I notice the machine is made in Canada. 600 volt motors are more common in Canada than the US. Use to see some on Canadian oil drilling rigs back in the early 80's. Be sure to check the voltage requirements on the power feed as it may be 600 volt as well. It looks like there is a nameplate on it that should have that info. I would think that a 1/2 hp motor should be sufficient to run the press.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Bob
