View Full Version : Garbage Disposal?

We've had this one as long as the house, 16 years. Lately it will run only a few seconds and kicks out the circuit breaker. It has a thermal breaker on it but it's not that, which has gone before when it's jammed, so I fear the bearings are shot or maybe it has a short and needs replacement. Any advice on a good brand?

I had the same experience. The old grinder that came with the house finally died. I installed an "In Sink erator", not the bottom end but not the top end either. It's so quiet I have to be careful I don't leave it on. That's a significant change from the old one - if I was out in the shop when my wife turned it on, I knew it was running.

It seems to work fine at grinding stuff up - no issues there. Never had it jam or give any problems.

Bought it at the blue borg. If I recall it was a bit over $100 ($120??) when I bought it. May be a bit more now

I've had good luck with what Mike suggested: "In Sink Erator"s. Also had a "Badger 1" that didn't do a very good job on long peelings (carrot peels), so they'd go right through and clog the drain. I'd avoid that brand in the future.

The old one is an in-sink-erator too, and I guess lasting this long with 5 of us using it most of that time is not bad.

I think this (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=240439-712-SPACE%20SAVER&lpage=none)is the one I have. I agree with Dan - avoid like the plague anything that has the model name "Badger" - they don't work well and are noisy. They're targeted at contractors who want the lowest cost for a subdivision, apartment, or a spec house.

I looked therm up, most are a/3 or 1/2 HP and start at $79 for the Badger, I like this one, Mike, with 5/8 HP and just looks like it would be quieter.

I just put in the 3/4 HP version of the Insinkerator in my new kitchen. Works great, and can't believe how quiet it is. The water hitting the stainless sink is quite a bit louder than the disposal.

I'd also give a vote of confidence to the Badger models. We've had those at two different houses and they've worked fine for years and years. Much louder, and chances are they don't grind as fine, but we never had any drain clogs so it is hard for me to say.

Sound doesn't make a lot of difference as far as performance goes. You can easily tell which ones have the sound insulation package though--they're the ones that are twice as big in diameter.

Most of them are pretty good and if you compare specs prices are fairly close. If your wife wants a particular brand and it costs $30 more, buy it.

OK, I got a 3/4 Horse Insinkerator for $129.95 that appears to be larger diameter and hopefully quieter than the cheaper ones. The real quiet ones are just way too big and heavy for my taste. I may put it in this afternoon or wait until the morning.

Not only does mine rid me of organic trash, it powers my house:

It's in and works nicely. Not totally silent but about 1/2 as loud as the old one!
