I found this on CL --- They had 2 different jointers... one 4" I think that connected to a Shopsmith... not real sure...

But I scored a Grizzly G1182 6"Jointer it has a date on the label says 1999 for $25. Very light surface rust on the tables and fence. Missing the key between the table and the fence. Already ordered replacement from Grizzly. The guy was going to throw it in the dump if I wasn't going to pick it up today. I don't have a truck, so I took it apart and threw the main jointer in the back seat of my mazda Protoge and the rest fit in the trunk. I just have to put it back together.

$25 for a jointer that works? I'd call that a gloat. Heck, its worth more by weight!

So I was looking around the web and found they have a Byrd Shelix Head for $350. Is it worth it to put it in this jointer??

I would say it's not worth it on a 6" jointer. A lot of people, myself included, end up upgrading to a larger jointer and you're probably going to loose money on the new head. If you leave it as is, an awesome score of a jointer, you can turn it around for $200 likely.

Fantastic! $25 bucks! You should buy a lottery ticket!

If that was a Shopsmith jointer, it's not a bad little tool for small projects. Of course you need a Model V to run it, but hey that's another tool hunt and isn't that what life is all about?

I figured out why it sold for so cheap...it didn't pass CA emmissions tests!

Hehe, great score. Makes my 2 Leeson 1.5 hp motors for $25 score not looks QUITE as sweet.

$25?? You've got to be kidding. I guess he really was a motivated seller.

I wouldn't spend the money on a Byrd head either. I get a lot of use out of blades as a hobbiest.. years. Now if you were using it every day, then maybe it makes more sense for the Byrd.
I'd save that $350 for the next tool purchase.

I guess that depends if you plan on keeping it or eventually upgrading to an 8". If you eventually sell it as is you will probably make $200. Sell it with a Byrd and you will probably loose $200. I upgraded to an 8" because I wanted a Byrd and couldn't justify putting that kind of money into a 6". Some people do put a Byrd in a 6" are completely happy.

Just use the stock head for now and enjoy your jointer! By the way....you suck! Good job.

Beautiful score... Fix the broken / missing, and clean it up and then just use the snot out of the thing...

You've got to wonder why somebody would effectively just throw away a jointer though. I mean $25.00 isn't even a tank of gas these days...

A tank... My deisel pick up has a 36 gallon tank. Right now, $2.55/gal. It's not even a 1/3 of a tank for me. But, hey, I'm not compaining. I remember not long ago, I was paying $5.50/gal. That is when it HURT!
