BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Spectators gathered as a historic tree in downtown Brunswick (http://www.wsbtv.com/news/19912965/detail.html#) that toppled during a storm Monday afternoon was cut up and hauled away.

An estimated 400 years old, the McCullough Oak stood on Union Street before Brunswick existed. Historians believe it was the second-oldest tree in Georgia (http://www.wsbtv.com/news/19912965/detail.html#).It split in two and came down on a parked car about 5:30 p.m.Gary Reynolds' 18-year-old daughter saw the tree land on her car."It kind of shook the house (http://www.wsbtv.com/news/19912965/detail.html#). (She) ran out and the car was covered by an oak tree," Reynolds said. "It happened about two minutes before she was going to enter the car, so we feel very blessed."

Susan Vendetti said her children grew up playing in its branches."I'd have at least two or three cars a day that would stop and pull up and take pictures," said Vendetti, whose house was shaded by the tree. "It was definitely a sight to behold."Tuesday morning, crews using a crane and other heavy equipment began cutting up and removing the tree.Vendetti said she will miss the once-living piece of history that graced her front yard."It's just a really sad day for us," said Vendetti.

Can't tell what kind of car it was, but it is defiantly a sub compact now.

Ed,

The family and I lived a few blocks from that tree in 1970 while I attended a school at NAS Glynco.

In 2000 we were back there again with our parents just to look around.

I'm sure there's some stories with that tree..... Would be fun to have a board or two out of it....

That's in Belinda's neck of the woods.......

I wish I had the time to run over to Brunswick and see what could be had.

Sure is Ed, a little less than an hour and a half south of me. I hated to hear about the loss of that tree. She was a beauty.

Ed,

Now I'm in Idaho and somewhat safe from Belinda's wrath.

You on the other hand are also in Georgia. I'd be careful

Ken, I think this tree was a She. She lived long enough to have great wisdom. She had graceful limbs, and a great strength. She had stories to tell. She sheltered and protected for all the years of her life. She lived long on the land and took only what she needed, and gave back everything she could. She produced many children. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a She.

Ed, Ken is a man of great wisdom. Don't make me come up there! FLowery Branch ain't that far away.

Her first time out in a car and look what she did to it - definitely a she... :D

Besides, if it were a he, it would still be up in the air because he'd refuse to ask for directions on how to fall.
