I was adjusting my planer today and was surprised to see that the instruction manual says to set the left side of the outfeed roller to 0.020" below the knife circle and the right side to 0.030" below. Any idea why you would want one end lower than the other? For what it's worth, it's a Delta DC-33.

Put me down for "I have no idea why". I have a DC-380, and it calls for a parallel setting on the out feed roller. Scratching my head.

I'm thinking what .030 looks like. My guess is that it's somewhat of a precaution that the downward force pressure of the planer "could" depending on the type of wood, temp, dryness, etc....could allow for some movement after it comes through the planer.

I'm NO expert but it seems if there is any flex in your board the outfeed after some distance through the planer doesn't matter too much if its close as the planer pressure will keep it lined up... then obviously w/ no support things would be different.

they do that because the torque on the gearside actually pulls the roller up.

read it on another forum. search google.

the guy actually called delta cust support and found out they still suport this planer.

so in other words.. set it up like they state.

My guess...typo. Contact the manufacturer. They may be able to explain it.

So did they tell you why?

yes. something about the torque thats created when the machine is running actuall lifts the one side by the difference. ??
