I've found that having a good shooting board and now the miter/tendon vice has made my joints easier and better at the same time.
Highly recommended.

Very nice set-up, Eric. If you do hand planing a shooting board is almost essential. You built a nice vise there also...

My old Stanley 358 Miter saw is about as dead on as you can get without using a shoot board or one of them knife slicer things

No doubt your miter saw cuts dead on but I have yet to see a saw cut that is as smooth as what a plane can do. Granted, not all joints need to be that smooth and for some the angle isn't critical either. Some people (like myself) want to at least strive for perfection even though it may seem like a waste of time to others. Besides, I like the gadgets.

I just plain like tools, never could afford the super expensive ones, so I just made my own, with some modifications of course.

Its ok to strive for perfection, few ever achieve it, but there is a time and place for everything. There is no need for a 30 micron finish on an axle spindle taper. its just a waste of time. One of my competitors had an old very meticulous machinist working for him, he ran perfection into the ground. It would take him 4 hours to do a 20 minute job. and the customers absoulutely refused to pay a huge sum of $60 for a $5 job.
