I just got my craftsman mortiser yday and was thinking this one looks promising in comparison to a standard x-y vise..

1)Wondering if the epoxy would hold up over time for attaching the bushings / nuts to ply?

2) anyone know of another/better design?

Brad,

I suggest that you visit the Grizzly Tools web site. They have two models of XY tables that are both great values and they will certainly outlast anything you could build from wood. For little small jobs you can use an XY vise that Harbor Frieght sells, they are cheap but they don't have much capacity.

Keith,

Those X-Y tables are like $400 & $600 - ouch!

Might as well buy a full size mortiser with a floor stand at that price! The new Steelex mortiser (T20836) is in that price range ($475 w/ shipping).

Not from Shopnotes. ...but I've been very happy with this solution incorporating an x-y vise.
