View Full Version : Ever Cut a Burl Off a Tree?

Do you cut it off flush with the trunk or do you cut a secton out of the trunk?

Cut the tree off above and below the burl and then cut the burl out of the disc?

How deep does the figure go into the wood of the tree?

Cut above and below the burl, generally I but about 6"

The wood in the trunk, behind the burl cah be a foot deep, really depends on the specie, age of tree, size of burl etc. I have cut some where I slabbed the entire trunk as there was figure in it, like this one. The tree was just to big to cut above and below the burl so I sliced it off, then vut slabs out of the trunk.

If you can get the March 2004 issue of Wood Magazine, Bruce Hoover (one of our local turners) has a good article on harvesting burls. The article title was "How to find the pearls in burls"
