you should leave one of the stumps whole, or get a stump of a different wood. and turn the whole thing make one big bowl. i would suggest a diggerent wood than walnut because you dont wanna waste it since you cant do corings. but all the time on the lathe doing a big peice like over 25inches should be good for you. then you can also see how the grain changes in the wood as you go and when you get back to cuttin more peices up you will be able to get even more figure out of it

I left em plenty big for doing large pieces/bowls. some even 8" thick that would turn a 22" bowl or more. I will start with some of the smaller cut-offs to gain some experience befor I tackle the larger stuff. I need a coring set up is what I need...
I hope to provide this stuff to other members here and soon wee will see turnings of this stuff showing up all over this forum.:D

My pm box is smoking allready from interested members..

Ary you cutting it all with an eye to just bowls? Some great HF's in there. Some wild grain and color there.

Claro walnut is one of my favorites. Way, way back I had a source in Chico, Ca. When the NRA sold thousands of Springfield rifles in the 50's for $15, lots of guys were sporterizing them for hunting. I got into the stock making business as a sideline. Most of them were done with claro walnut.

There may be some trees that look better than that stuff, Mark; but that is plum gorgeous. LOML just commented how nice that someone passed it on instead of burning it. Her uncle who had five American blck walnut trees in his yard, burned the shed limbs for years. Very much looking forward to seeing the finished turnings. :D:D

I am sooooo jealous of you folks that have access to that kind of wood. Up here in Northwest Montana, its nothing but pine, birch, elm, maybe an oak or maple once in awhile and lots of pine cones and fresh air.

That is one beautiful piece of wood!!!

Thanks Skip, I've spent some time weilding a chainsaw. The eye for where to cut is a combination of experience and a bit of luck, but yeah, I thought about it for a while. The first cut was important as all the others had to follow its lead.
