I am working on a Green man with Grape leaves. I have pretty much finished the face detail and am starting the leaves. This is my first. I was wondering what techniques others use to undercut the leaves. When I was working on the undercutting last night I used a skew to slice under the leaves but found it difficult to prise out the waste, it came out in in splinters for the most part.
the entire work is about the size of a serving platter about one and a half inches thick. the wood is Bass. the leaves will have a separation at most of 3/16 inch.

Thanks
John

Based on tool profile, not experience (I'm new to carving), I'd try a 45* V tool. OR... Three weeks ago I watched a carver making his own tools. Your question has me thinking drill rod and some warding files could produce a 20* V tool. It may not re robust enough to be a commercial tool, but could be resilient enough to do this job with frequent sharpening.
