3d engraving

i am going to start trying to play with 3d again i have searched the forum but "3d" is to small to bring back anything. does anyone have any good info on 3d engraving? i also know that it has to do with % of black used so if anyone has any insight on that it would be great. i guess im just looking for something to start from the ground up ....... if that makes sense thank you
