Large Cherry Burl Bowl

While turning this chunk of Cherry, I had to battle it out with a colony of carpenter ants, a nest of termites, and a handful of huge unidentified black bugs. I literally had to stop turning every 2-3 minutes so I could clean the bug splats off my face shield and sweep all the creepy-crawlers from around the lathe and off of me. I can say that it was definitely worth the fight. The walls wound up being about 1" thick because of the deep see-thru inclusions. The bowl measures 13 1/2" across and 6 1/2" tall. I was able to core a smaller bowl from this one and give it to the man who supplied the burl. It was DA soaked(mainly to kill the bugs), then applied with Danish Oil and several coats of lacquer.

Tony - congrats on being able to keep this one together! Great looking wood and I love all the character it has with all the bark inclusions and voids! Nice work! You should be happy with this one!

Thanks Steve, as for keeping this one together, I stretched wrapped the outside so that I could do my finish turning on the inside. :eek:

Good call on leaving it thick. Thinner walls would have meant losing a lot of the character. And despite all the potholes in the road, you ended up with a nice, smooth outside curve. That's not easy to do.

I wonder if they make windshield wipers for face shields. :rolleyes:
