I really never realized how large these ships truly are. Docking in Malta.

4 1/2 acres sovereign American territory at sea.

That must be an older picture though. It has F-14's on it and they have been retired since 2006.

My youngest son was a ships company officer aboard the USS Carl Vinson. I rode her from SF to Bremerton. My wife road her from Pearl Harbor to San Diego and on to Bremerton when they were returning from the Persian Gulf in January 2002.

Renewed our faith in the younger generation!

My oldest grandson is aboard the USS Harry S Truman out of Norfolk.

Are they really that big?

I see them just about every day here in our local area, we think of them as mobile multi-story shopping malls :)
I did a short term at Newport News Shipbuilding and worked on a couple of these big gray things. I will admit it is an amazing feeling when your standing on the pier right next to one that starts to back up.

All of them come back home when their thirsty :)

Sure - they're big when you compare them to the cars on the adjacent road, but...
just look at how short that runway is. It is amazing that anything other than a helicopter can take off of that.
