I want to upgrade from a king to a queen. This board was so helpful when i built my built in closets, which i documented with pictures on this site.

I live in NYC so i dont have a work space but i can just have the lumber yard cut the wood to my specs, which means i need to have a good detailed plan.

I need some advice on if its worth building my own bed. i see all these beds for sale for like 1500-2k and i dont like any of them. i'm not a fan of box springs so i just wanted a nice platform bed, but the ones they sell in stores sit too low.

Is it cost effective to build a simple platform king bed with 4 legs - and basic wood rails. i would like to use real woods and quality matterials so it looks great and is of good quality.

similar to this bed but with real wood beams and one that will sit higher off ground and not stick out as much so i dnt kill my knee every time i try to get in and out of bed.

any thoughts?

If you punch my name---Gary Max----go to my homepage----you can see some of the beds I build.
Go to Serta.com and they have the mattress sizes----or I sent them a email and they gave me the info.
Queens are easy compared to kings---queens will fit through a doorway.
Hope this helps

I have built a couple of them and, depending on the design, they are pretty straighforward. Might be tough to do without a workspace simply due to the amount of room building them requires (but that could just be y work habits).

Very rewarding project actually. My kids sleep in the ones that I built.

i know this is hard to guest-imate but i was thinking some think wood posts for the legs and rails and then either buying the headboard or just a simple wood panel... the hardest part will be to rent the equipment to install the hardware...

Here: http://woodgears.ca/projects.html

He's got plans and pictures for a Queen bed, and also a single bed.
And as a bonus, the single bed is built using 2x lumber, and still comes out looking pretty decent.

(personally I would use bed bolts to attach things, but you can decide that for yourself.)
