I have one Hunter tool and I really like it. I've wanted one of the large ones but can't afford it, so I bought just the cutter and made my own. The cutter is 1/2" in dia. and the steel bar is 5/8". I tried it out tonight and it works great! Thanks for looking.

That looks like it'll work great. Well done.

Great job.

How did you cut the recess for the disk? It fits so nice.

Nice work Chris. Looks a lot better than the one I made. My 1/2" cutter does not seem to cut all that well, but the 3/8" is just dandy.

That looks great!
I'm interested as well as to where you got the cutter and how you made it.

I have been looking at 1 of them but I though it would be to aggressive and get a lot of catches , do you use it to hollow out forms or bowles ??

Fine job on a very detail orientated project. Did yourself proud. You know "homemade" always works better. The satisfaction factor is very high...Bill..

It is likely to catch if you are using it with the cutter facing 12 o'clock. Rotate the cutter about 45 degree to the left or right, it would produce a nice finish cut.

Thanks for the nice comments! Basically I mounted the bar in a vise in my drill press and drilled a small hole, about 1/8" in dia. about 1/3 of the way through the bar. Then using the 1/8" hole as a guide for the point, I used a 1/2" cobalt bit and drilled to the depth of the cutter. In the depression left by the point of the 1/2" bit, I drilled and tapped for the screw to hold the cutter. Then I cut the bar off where the bottom edge of the cutter came. Then ground it round to fit and filed it smooth. The cutter I bought from Woodcraft, about $20.00.
Like Gordon said, you use it at about 45 degrees, as with all tools it has a sweet spot.

Chris,

Thanks for the explanation. Did you get the OEM Torx screw? Or you use a generic screw (what size)?
In this tough economic times, we have to do what we have to do.

Hi Gordon, our Woodcraft didn't have the OEM Torx screw so I used an 8-32 size machine screw. Works fine.

Great job Chris! Looks very professional. I've been meaning to make a couple myself ( a straight one and a hook tool ) ... I have the parts here, just not the time. Maybe I will make them this weekend. I was just watching Alan Lacer's new video on tool making (good DVD BTW). It didn't really tell me much that I didn't already know, but it got me thinking about tool making again. I need to make some Oland tools, some Hunter tools, some hook tools, maybe a chatter tool, ... so little time, so much to play with. :)

Chris, VERY nice tool; I've been making handles this week for some hook tools, and am in the process of making a Hunter clone, too - messed up on today's effort; broke the small drill bit and tap - rats. tell me, would you, what did you use to shape the tool holding bar where the cutter sits. mike
