I borrowed a saw from a friend of mine thats more up to the task than my Husky 350 with a 20" bar. Its a Stihl with a 34" bar.

So after supper I went out and fired it up to see what is inside the round of walnut its sitting on..
I asked the wife to get a few action pics of me hard at work

And the resulting slabs...

This one piece has a split down the middle, guess wher the next cut will be for it?

I'll tackle the other three more complex pieces tomorrow as its getting dark out now.

That is some really pretty walnut Mark. I bet its a blast to see what comes out when you crack a chunk open!

Definitely cool, I have never used a chainsaw over 24" but boy would I love to. I love the feeling of a chainsaw in my hand.

That is some beautiful walnut, I'm looking forward to when you really start throwing the big pieces at your lathe.

Mark --- Dang, that's some pretty wood!!!

You would probably find it easier to saw if you don't go directly into the end grain, but flip the log 90 degrees away from you (in the third pic), so the end grain is facing you, and make the same cut. You will need to wedge the log to keep it from rolling, but it's much easier on the saw, and will go much faster.

How thick are you cutting the slabs? Did I mention that's some nice wood?

in high school, i worked in the local ace hardware. i was their tech guy who worked on the small engine stuff that was brought in. one of the services offered was saw chain sharpening.

one time a fellow brought in his stihl 090 with an 84" (7 feet!) bar. it took an hour and a half to sharpen the silly thing! guy said he used it on cypress knees down in south ga.

Very nice!

You may want to invest in some more face protection than just prescription glasses.

while it is some pretty wood
why are you cutting it up?
the more it is cut the more cracks and splits
cut only enough that you can turn today or tomorrow

That's some impressive wood.

How do you intend to dry it?

But to reply,
It is some real nice stuff. I was lucky to come across such a haul.

I am cutting it up to share and sell. Much will be shipped out sooner than later.

It was a new experience working with such a big saw, The biggest I have used to date was a 24" man what a difference 10" makes not to mention the extra power of the Stihl. I cut it the way I did to maintain the accuracy in the thickness of the end piece. If I was to cut with the grain it would likely wander more than it did.

I sliced up one slab (the biggest one) for a blank for another member and I re-sawed some for my brother who loves nice wood, especially walnut!! he will make something nice from it I am sure.

As for drying it, I will seal up what is not shipped out with anchorseal on all sides to minimize the warping and cracking.

I cant wait to cut up the other pieces...

If anyone would like a piece of this stuff let me know, we can work a deal.

More to come...
