This is a piece of stringy bark burl. The spot you see that looks like it has no finish is actually the wood. Quite unusual. While I was waiting for the piece to dry, I thought that spot was dry and the rest was still wet. I waited months and no change. I turned it rough to 1" thick and it turned into an egg. I waited more months and no change so I finished it. It turned out to be a sort of birth mark on the wood.
The top is Gabon Ebony, the finish is 3 coats of Tung oil and 4 coats of whipe on poly. I still need to take it to the 3 wheel. I have to set it up again. It stands about 5 inches tall and 6 inches wide.
Sorry for the crappy pics. My photo tent is at work. Please enjoy my friends.

Very pretty!

The 'birth mark' adds character to it.

Good job.

Beautiful work for a piece with only two "segments". Very nice, Bill.

Thanks. for 2 segments it sure took long enough. This thing took months to dry out.:D I have about 6 or 7 more blanks of this wood. They're bigger so it'll be a year or more before they can be started on.

HAHHAAA You have a great memory. I do still plan on building it but I've been getting work that actually pays lately. And believe me, it's been a big help in getting through this economy. Good news is, I've learned some new things that I'll be implimenting in the turning I have in mind. It'll just get better.:D Thanks for reminding me. I have 4 more humidors to build but I'll get on it soon. Oh yea, I also have 2 big cabinets to build as well but I'll be doing those durring business hours at my other shop.

Bill, The burl wood is great and the little "Birth mark" gives a great look to it! The finish is very nice too, keep showing us you beautiful work.
