Why is there no marble in the cans of gloss Deft lacquer and the semi-gloss and matte lacs have the rattle can? (Now hows that for the important question of the day?) No, I don't know the answer....that's why I asked!:D

Randy,
The semi-gloss and matte, contain flattening agents that will settle and have to be mixed well with the lacquer to work. The gloss doesn't contain these agents, so it doesn't need the marble.

The gloss finish is likely to be stronger since it doesn't have these other ingredients in it well.

The problem with gloss though, is that your turning, sanding, and final coat, must be absolutely flawless in order not to look like a piece of junk.:o

Can you mix coats of Matte and gloss on the same workpiece? (in order to reverse what Jim's talking about)

You can put gloss under anything, it's the last coat(s) that matter the most. Matte/semi gloss is all about scattering the light instead of reflecting it perfectly. Once you put a coat of finish with light scattering agent in it, you lose the full clarity of a clear gloss coat, even if you put gloss over it.
