Like Alan's post earlier, I too gluede up the treads and the landing using Ash.
The landing was intended to look like a sunburst which gives the appearance of leading you around to the next set of steps. I also used costruction adhesive with angle brackets from behind, that way the fasteners were not exposed. I finished with 4 coats of oil base poly with the last coat being satin. Here is a page that shows additionals pictures of the project.

The stairs is just part of the Entryway remodeling project. Still to be made are all from ash, a hand rail, a set of 6 foot bifold panel doors and a coat rack which will match the look of the cutom moldings I made around the doors and window.

I love the staircase, and the ash. Is ash durable enought for stairs? It is one of my favorite woods to work; I like the smell of it being milled.

The way you use the "sunburst" is very effective in making the entire stairs more "unified", rather than several related, but distinct sections. Nice job!

Really nice looking job there! I must confess though that the contrast in the wood gives my ageing eyes dificulty in seeing where the treads begin and end. Lookin down with bifocals might cause some consternation. :o With the emerald ash borrer problem here in Michigan, I have been thinking about getting my hands on some of that wood.

Garry,

Nice color/grain selection on the sunburst pattern. I see that you were careful with the selection for those pieces.

I look forward to the rest of the pieces for the stairwell!

Way, WAY neat, Garry! :) Even though one can't see any fasteners, I think you "nailed" it on all counts: Design, wood choice and execution! :D Great job!

Well Alan, ash is used for wood baseball bats and was used in the past for skies on drays that hauled many logs. The stairs are very sound and quiet with the ash and I prefer to work with ash over oak and like the color contrast.

There doesn't seem to be a problem with the contrast and glasses, Last week my folks visited and both where bifocals, they did not have any difficulty with the stairs.
If you are looking for good quality kiln dried ash at less than 1.00 per BF, email me and I can let you know where you can purchase at any quanity.
Thanks to all for the great comments. I will post more as the project progress'
