Simple question:

How do you make a threaded lid for a round box

any tricks to keep the grain aligned when the box is closed

thanks

Phil,

I haven't tried that yet, My first thought would be to make the threadeed lid at least 1 thread too deep. Then, I would face off the threaded end of the lid until the grain lined up.

Scribing the starting and stopping points of the threads sounds a bit iffy.

The Klein Threading jig is too spendy for my budget...

Try experimenting with this technique.

I made a threading jig last fall...along the lines of this one http://www.atbq.qc.ca/jm2/thread.htm But I used my lathe to hold the cutter, rather than a router.

Scrap lumber and some hardware store parts, along with a collet chuck and cutter. Total cost was around $75.

I've made maybe a half dozen bowls with threaded lids...all of them were segmented bowls, and grain alignment wasn't an issue, due to the dark color of the lids. I would have no idea how to align the threads for a grain match, but will be interested in seeing what others recommend.

Phil,

Some of the turning suppliers sell brass inserts for adding threads to boxes. It restricts the size of your box to the size of the insert, but it's an option.

Phil,

I made one by welding 2 nuts to a simple bar and mounting it in a Bitmoore vise that I had. A muffler shop could probably weld this up very inexpensively. I chose the threaded rod pitch that best suited my needs from McMaster-Carr. A pic is here:

Here's one I made:

I'd recommend using acme threaded rod though...

I do a lot of threaded vessels. I made my own jig, but never use it. I tried the Klein Jig but liked the Baxter jig a lot better. I keep coming back to hand chasing of threads. It's pretty easy, with practice. faster than a jig, and very rewarding. If you want to use wood that isn't dense enough for good threads, dope it with CA or install epoxy thread carriers ( www.timpwoodturners.org/feb09.html ).

I forgot..grain matching is done as the last step of threading. Remove wood at the base of the male threads until the grain lines up. It won't take much. At 20 tpi the most you could be off is 1/20th of an inch. A job best done with a point tool.
