I am in the process of putting together an elevated feeding station for my dog. I am looking for recommendations on a finish that can stand up to the spilled water and slobber from a sloppy drinker. I was kind of planning on a wipe on poly but, will it keep the water out? I do not have spray equipment. Thanks - Larry

Try some spray deft lacquer. You can get it from Wally world and its a nice hard finish that will take some water abuse.

Larry, I may be thinking of something totally different, but I would not make it from wood.

Ditto on what Phil said. Plastic laminate would be a good choice.

Any oil based interior finish will work fine. Let it fully cure 3-4 weeks before subjecting it to any use or abuse. Don't use a "spar" varnish as these finishes are formulated to be soft and flexible. They have poor abrasion resistance and are actually less water resistant than interior finishes.

Oil base finishes are more water and water vapor resistant than waterborne finishes or any one part lacquer finishes.
