I had so much fun yesterday I felt I should share it with you-alls.

What a blast it is when the curls pile up, when ya get a good edge going.

Keep in mind I am a noob at wood turning so I haven't yet developed any real technique. I will be looking around for other turners nearby and maybe arrange a monthly gathering so I can get some pointers on presenting the tool to the work.

I had the camera set up on its tripod so I just moved it into position and switched it to video. I got three different perspectives, the second one was fun but it was in my way so my approach to the work was compromised.

Looking good, yeah definitely get with a teacher, that'll speed up the learning curve a ton.

Looks good Mark. If you have a woodturning chapter near you that would help a lot. I wish I did but didn't so relied on DVD's and books.

Mark - the more you turn - the funner it gets! Still, if you can get with an experienced turner for awhile, it will save you countless hours of trial and error in learning how best to use the different gouges. At this stage of the game - just have fun but remember to always listen to that inner voice - if it doesn't feel safe - then don't do it!

go to this site to find a local turning club. it is worth while to drive an hour or so once a month for the amount of knowledge you get.

Thanks for the link Tony,
The closest to me is Fresno which is about an hour drive each way, I'll consider joining but I think I'll advertise on our local internet yellow pages and see if there are any turners near me and maybee I'll start up a Sierra mountian chapter. I have watched most all the youtube vids and some are quite helpull.

Steve, my inner voice is one chatty little cuss;) lol

Bernie, got any DVD's you would be willing to loan me? I wonder if I can get anything from Netflix?

Alex. I had no idea of the gradient of the learning curve. I am enjoying the challenge.

And you can probably find some local to you, or even check the website may have a directory of mentors that are in your area.

An hours drive? I've belonged to several clubs over the years. One of them was 80 miles away, and their meetings were at night. I went to every meeting that I could. The opportunity to rub shoulders once a month with a bunch of other turners is something that an avid turner shouldn't miss. Demos, instant gallery, perhaps mentoring, lots of discussions on turning and more. Try it, you'll like it.

The biggest favor you'll give yourself would be a class in turning basics.

An hour drive isn't out of the question I will look into it but I bet there are folks closer to me. I just posted on our local internet classified to see if there are any turners near me.
A class in the basics is in order I will agree. Did my style look that bad? I had my pinkey out:p

Actually your form looks pretty good. I think some of us are anxious to see just how good you can be with some formal training. Your not afraid to try things. You have the mechanics down and understand angles. Your probably going to be one of those "naturals". Plus you have that beast of a lathe and all that gorgeous wood:D

Your words touch me, and I appreciate that.
I will seek out some professional guidance, after all, thats why I am here.;);)

Another option is to find a local woodworking store that holds classes. I attended a bowl turning class at a Woodcraft store. I ended up joining the same turning club that the instructor belongs to, lol. You might check and see if any local woodworking places near you have classes and see if you can get into a bowl turning class.

There are no 'local' woodworking stores near me. The closest is in Fresno. Maybe I should open one in Merced, I wonder if Woodcraft would entertain a franchise?

Thanks Keith, It is working out real well. With some simple bracing I could expand on the design for the production model:)
