My wife has been telling me to make something out of some of the scrap wood lying about..... I know she loves Bird's Eye Maple and she's had her on on that piece of Tulipwood laying around too... I'm going to do a couple of splines with the Tulipwood....

Anyway....on to the subject.

Most of the time when you try to glue that little "keeper piece" on the bottom of the lid, the glue makes it slide around and you don't want to mark up the bottom of an already sanded lid. It's geneally a pain to set it up for gluing that way.

Just take some paper and crumple it up.... in this case it was paper towels.... could have been newspaper or whatever.... and put it inside the box.

Then, put glue on the "keeper piece" and stay about 3/8-1/2" from the edge with the glue. You're still gonna slide it around a little.

The "keeper piece" gets pressed together with the bottom of the lid.... and I used rubber bands to squeeze it all together. The crumpled paper puts upward pressure on the "keeper piece" and the rubber bands take care of the opposing force.

Measuring and eyeballing it works very well at this point...you have plenty of open time with the glue. And, you're not making a mess with the glue - because you didn't go all the way to the edges.

Keep it like this for about 15 to 30 minutes.... take it apart - and "Perfect Fit"
(now i just need to sand the box - after the splines)....
