Well, yesterday was an exciting day for me. After turning the first piece on my new machine I was excited to see what was inside the smallest of the seven pieces of walnut burl I brought home a few weekends ago.

It is a crotch burl and was about 24" in diameter. So I gassed up the trusty Husky 350 and put fresh batteries in the Kodak. I was hesitant as to where to make the first cut and then just decided to split it down the middle and go from there. I got about twenty pics of the fun I had and just had to share.

I also have a proposition for all you creekers. I have several small cut-offs that are big enough for pen blanks. Likely several hundred when all is said and done. So for those of you that are interested, if you send me a SASE padded mailer I will stuff a blank or two in it and drop it in my mail box for you free of charge. I first have to get a new blade for my band saw but that should be on order in the next few days. Just shoot me a pm for my address.

Now for the pics of my gloat...

Prior to cutting it up...

Just a few minutes later I had some nice chunks of wood.

Mark that is some gorgeous wood. Just hang it on the wall as is. Looks like art already. Some of those pics you can just lose yourself in them as you start seeing faces and such! Very very cool!

That is simply beautiful!!!
It seems to me that there really isn't a wrong way to cut up a burl. This journey here on SMC has been a tremendous inspiration. May you have fantastic good fortune with your turnings. Congrats!!
