I've decided to make my son, and a few of his buds, a 30 Cal Deer Antler Pen. I've never done deer antler before.

1. How far down would you sand?

2. How would you finish it?

Tks

Sand to 600 and c/a then m/m to desired gloss.

thanks for the advise..

MM to desired gloss? What is MM?

I just figured it out? MM = MicroMesh?

Depending on the look you are going for, I sometimes try and leave some of the original texture of the antler. I feel it looks more authentic and believable as antler.

Like John, I try to watch closely, where my drill bit goes, when drilling, so if there's a curve to the antler, maybe I can turn it down and still leave some of the natural horn showing.
I sand to 400 grit, then MM to the max, and use CA finish. About 3 or 4 coats, then cure time, and MM the last 4 grits again, then 3 or 4 more coats of CA... depending on how far you want to go with it.
Have fun, above all! :D

At another site, someone posted some video's from a web site which was phoneminal.. absolutely wonderful...

I've completed the deer antler pen and the puzzle pen kit from woodturners. They look absolutely awsome.

I'll try to figure out how to post pics later tonight....

Thanks to everyone for their help.
