Can someone tell me the use of the tracks in the side of the banjo?

There for use with a dust collection hood made by Powermatic to fit the tracks.
You could go to powermatics web site & look it up under lathe accessories.

Those groves are used to hold the mounting bracket for a Dust Port Assembly (#6294796) that Powermatic sells for the 3520b lathe. Link -- http://www.osolnikmachinery.com/6294796-powermaticdustportassemblyfor3520blathe.aspx

But is it worth a darn? The dust hood that is. And congrats on the lathe.:)

I had seen the dust collector, but it didn't say it attached to the banjo. Thanks for the replies. And, yes, I love it.

Dan - Welcome to the Creek! General rule here is (in a good way) that photos are proof! Hope to see some photos of your new lathe real soon! Would also like to see some of your turnings!

Congrats on the new lathe. You'll be smiling for a long time.

I've not used the PM dust scoop, but I've been told they're OK for spindle work but a bit small for bowls and other large faceplate pieces.

The grooves on the banjo are for the Powermatic dust collector attachment. I have a photo of it in my reivew of the 3520B and it is in the video (I think) in that review as well.
As mentioned it works better for spindle work than bowls but that is true of just about all dust collecting shrouds not designed specifically for bowls. However, the Powermatic shroud is a clamshell design that can be opened and closed to better fit the project at hand.

and lots of other info on your lathe at the Mustard Monster Site:

I find the aluminum lamp shade coupled with a small fan that blows air past me to be very effective.

Give us a picture of what comes off that new lathe. Can't believe all the folks getting new lathe's. Perhaps times are now quite a bad as the news media is telling us.

The sales on a lot of tools has been excellent. Thanks for asking the question, BTW. I just put my 3520B together and was wondering the same thing. :)

That was a stealth gloat if ever there was. Congrats on your new lathe, too.

Oh, sorry. Was not meant to be a gloat. Did that already. Looking forward to some day light in the "To Do" list though so I can play a bit.:)
