Here is my first pierced project. The woods are maple and cambarra. I stained the pierced part to match the cambarra. It is about 3 1/2" long. Right now it has shellac on it, but I still need to cut it back and add a final finish of poly or lacquer. Thanks for looking. (PS: Sorry about the crappy pic)

I think you did a fine job all around, especially for a first. The piercing pattern looks good and random. That's hard to do well. Your forms are nice, too, and the photo's not all that bad either. ;)

Chris - very impressive ornament! Great job on the piercing! I like how you stained the pierced area to tie in with the rest of the form! Nice work!

Chris

That is a great looking piece and that is one of the have to try projects on my list which is quite long. How did you do the piercing??? What tool did you use??? What was the most difficult part of making the ornament??? Thanks for showing.

Thanks for the nice comments guys! John, I used a very small drill bit in my dremel to do the piercing and cleaned it up with needle files. Next time I'm going to try some tiny carving bits. Experimenting to see which method I like best. The hardest part for me was getting the hollowing done evenly and thin enough without blowing through the side. The one I started after this became two tiny bowls :o :D

I like the piece and especially the piercing. Turning is a lot of fun and doing a little more is lots of fun too. What kind of tools do you use to hollow the main part?

Thanks again guys! Marc, I bought the new Sorby micro hollow tools. I just bought the straight and curved blades and made my own handles. Got them from CSUSA and I really like them.
