i am looking to build a garden bench.i have quite a bit of 3/4 white oak.my question is has anyone ever glued up 3 3/4 inch pieces of wood to make arms and legs.if so what type glue did you use.thanks.

Yes, and tite bond type III, good cauls, plenty of clamping pressure. glue it up as thick sandwiches, pairs of three (six board stacks for instance) with some platens or cauls above and below. Not hard, works well. Leave in clamps over night, let it cure 78 hours before working to avoid or minimize glue line creep.
