Mirror Project

I'm going to attempt to build a frame for a mirror. The person I'm building it for wants it out of maple and a grey smoked finish. What he's actually asking for is a finish that looks like smoke tinted acrylic or sunglasses.

Does anyone know of a technique where I can add something to polyurathane to give it that smoked/sunglass tinted look. Probably have to use water based as that won't yellow over age.
All ideas welcome.
