Anyone have any suggestions as to who makes an affordable yet good quality 6" belt/12" sanding station. I was looking at the Grizzly unit but it only comes with a 3/4 HP motor. Everything else I have looked at is over $1,000. :( I have looked through Craigslist but no luck yet (at least in my price range).

Jack... unless you are in a commercial shop where speed is important, 3/4 horse is plenty in a belt/disc sander. I have the Jet 6x48-9" disc and I have never needed more power than the Jet has(3/4 horse). It will hog off wood with the best of them. Keep your belts clean with a rubber sanding stick, and you should be fine with 3/4 horse. Honest. :) Id be more interested in proper belt tracking and the Jets are great in this respect.

I know someone that has the delta 12" setup that is hardly used, sells new for over $1200 but is parting for half if you make it to Colorado!;)

The Griz 1183/1276 has been sold basically unchanged for a couple decades. A proven design that I think you'll find plenty of reviews on if you Google it. The only complaint I have read is that there is no dust port on the disc(?). I don't know if this has been resolved on newer models or not.

Thanks, but a little to far to drive for me.

I had a 1014, its OK, but nothing to write home about. The disk is only a 9" diameter as well. I replaced it with a Powermatic 30A that I rebuilt last year. I would also recommend looking for one of the older Delta sanders as well. Sanders pop up from time to time, but the going price for one in decent shape is going to be around 4-500 bucks, keeping in mind that they went for about 1500 new. If you do find an older machine, look for wear in the platen and how well it tracks a belt. Older sanders seem to have the roughest life of all machine tools, its rare you dont find one without a groove worn in from a mistracked belt. But they are fixable and once repaired, you won't want to be without it.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out it I come across any older machines. Guess I will just have to keep looking and wait for one of the old heavy sanders to cross my path.
