Some of the CL stuff I see makes me wonder how they came up with a value. Latest example:

Saw Horses (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/tls/1178380113.html)

Somebody suggested that at 50 years of age they classified as antiques?

Hey, you can put any price you like on stuff you sell...it just may not sell. :)

If the top is a 2x6 and they are hardwood----is that really a bad price????

Yeah. Not considering actual value, if any, $29 seems like a strange price. Privately priced items like that are usually multiples of $5 or $10.

Maybe the seller is adapting the marketing practice of backing off a nickel or penny from an even dollar price, $19.95, $29.99, etc., to make the price seem less than it is. Maybe many people really do react as if $29.95 were significantly less expensive than $30.

A pet peeve of mine is the $x.xx 9/10 pricing on gasoline and diesel fuel. Does saving a penny on a 10 gallon fuel purchase really make that much difference.

Geez I guess I have a virtual gold mine in my storage building. I have so many sets of these Ive made over the years. I had no idea I could get $29 for them!! LOL

Maybe you would like the Harbor Freight Fein imitator http://newjersey.craigslist.org/tls/1152132231.html

This is funny. There was a set on the Chicago CL a little bit ago that was similiar to that ad. People post on there without ever even researching what the crap is even worth.

I see people posting ads for asking people to PAY up to $10,000 to take down a tree for its lumber, AND be licensed and insured.

If the top is a 2x6 and they are hardwood----is that really a bad price????Yeah, he's doing it wrong. Ad should read:

"Old pine timbers, as seen on 'New Yankee Workshop', $2/bf"

They'd be gone before the ink was dry on the pixels.

Why doesn't $110 work?

and so it goes

Because it's a mold plane. That's why it's $111. Gosh I'd pay $112 for a mold plane.

Don’t get me started on craigslist Ken; it was great when it was just us regular guys trying to sell an item here or there. Now we’ve got the guys running businesses because they’re too cheap to use Ebay and guys running sneaky auctions against the rules. Why else would you list a 14” bandsaw for $50 for instance, thankfully someone flagged it, or these fabulous antique saw horses. Aaarg! Guess I did get started.

In my area they list almost new compact tractors with several attachments for $4900. The attachments are worth more than that. This happens frequently and stays on CL until it gets flagged.

Don't get too excited Jim. That's $29 per pair, not each!

You thought that was bad... I saw this and remembered your post:

I have a pair of wooden sawhorses, each probably about 3 or 4 feet long. The working surfaces are covered with blue carpet. They do not fold like a plastic one would, but they're sturdy. I would recommend them for use in a fixed location. Pick up in Reston. $45 or best offer for the pair.

Even better, try putting exactly 1 gallon into your tank and asking for the 1/10th cent back in change.

Edit -- What I can't understand are the Snap-On tool boxes I see every day in the $6,000 range. Doesn't matter to me what NASCAR driver is airbrushed on the front, or what anniversary car it commemorates. Six large? No thanks.

Eric,
Check on the cost of new Snap-On tool boxes.
I have the inexpensive Costco boxes that I bought around 15 years ago and love them. Not quite a big as some of the Snap-On or Matco boxes but fine for what I need.
The heavy duty steel saw horses won't cost $45 for two brand new. Guess it is the expensive carpet covering that makes them so valuable.

I sometimes put strange amounts on low priced itmes on Craigslist so folks can offer me less and I get the amount I really wanted. Say I want to sell something for $25. I might list it for $27 to $29 so someone offers $25 and thinks they got a deal. Sometimes I get the full amount which is all the better for me.

I usually put the price in $5 increments on more expensive stuff, but I don't sell all that much.
