Don,

Beautiful piece. Please explain how you hollowed out something that small.

Don,

How about turning some fancy-wood toothpicks to display in your fancy toothpick holder! Nice job! :D

Since this is an end-grain piece, you can use a small scraper to do the deed, either a "regular" flat scraper or a scraper type tool designed for hollowing small vessels. If you ever have the opportunity to see a demo by Bob Rosand, you'll be amazed at what you can do with some inexpensive steel. And if you take David Ellsworth's course, you'll see some tiny hollow vessels that were hollowed with doctored allen wrenches used as tools...

As the only tools that aren't packed away are a 1/2" round scraper, a 1/2" skew and a parting tool, the only thing I had that would work for hollowing was the 1/2" round scraper. Not very hard, but requires a little more sanding.

Amazing. The opening doesn't look 1/2 inch in diameter.

Jim, I'm taking some lessons from Bill Grumbine tomorrow and am registered for David Ellsworth's course in late October. I don't think I'm worthy....

Actually, you're about the best candidate for both instructors (as are most of us)...you know what a lathe does and how to use it but are not an advanced turner. The things you will learn from both gentlemen will have a profound effect on your skills. They teach the important things and leave you at a point that you can develop yourself futher with a solid grounding.

Enjoy your training!
