I have been trying to solve a problem I encountered when I tried to publish changes to my web site using Front Page 2003.

When I try to publish I get the following error message:

Server error: cannot close file "service.cnf"

I have multiple updates to do and need to get this fixed ASAP

I have pulled my hair out trying to correct the problem without any luck.

It may be that you have run out of webspace onn the server. Try to delete unneccesary files on the server.

Not hardly - have 500mb's - use nowhere near that

A quick Google found this....

and

It does sound like server space and the Microsoft link has ways to resolve it.

Good Luck..... Let us know if it works.

Ken, after reading the note that both Brian and Charles posted, I suggest you verify that you are not "collecting statistics" on your site. The log files can very easily and quickly use up that 500mb. I had to turn off logging on my site early on for that reason. Frankly, unless it's a critical commercial site, the logging isn't going to be missed too much! If you turn it off, you also need to remove the log file which if I recall clearly, starts with a "w" in the name.

Log files can indeed fill up a hard drive very quickly, imagine how large our log file is for The Creek :)

Remember that your web site is physically on a hard drive that is shared with other people and depending on how the drive is setup they could consume all of the disk space which would in turn cause the error message you received.

Thanks for all the inputs !!

This has plagued me for days. I checked all the files on the remote server which indicated I was only using 56.4MB of my 500MB allocation. I was not collecting any stats.

I did lots of things late last night after reading the links provided by Brian and Charles. Checked all the file sizes on the remote site, rechecked all Front Page settings, did a system restore, performed a complete computer virus scan (non found).

I believe Keith may have the right answer. This morning I went back to troubleshooting the problem. I have another site hosted by the same provider so I made a couple of changes to it and it published fine - thereby eliminating a problem with my Front Page software since the problem was unique to "The Old Rebel Workshop" site only. I then did a "publish site" on it and Guess what ?? -- the problem had disappeared. Evidently there was some problem with my ISP's server.

Everything is now working properly :) Go figure ?

Computers: a fickle medium; sometimes you just gotta reboot...several times! ;)
