I was lucky enough to get a good size maple burl and rough turned a platter about two years ago. I finished it in time for a Mothers Day present for my wife. While I was turning it I was reminded of a sun rise so I added blue for the sky. When it was finished it darkened and I thought it looked more like the Northern Lights. It is the first platter I made to hang on a wall. She liked it. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Marc - I really liked this piece when I got to see it at our turning club meeting! Loved the way the curl radiates out from the center! Also like the turquoise inlay as it really makes the color pop! Very nice work!

I like it a lot.

Aurora is fitting. Reminds me of night lights in the sky.

Marc, The rays in the wood are just perfect for your name of the platter! The color and inlay make it something special that your wife can cherish and hand down to future generations! A very nice piece of art.

The 10o'clock and the 2o'clock positions really do look like the Aurora Borealis. That is a really beautiful piece there. Reminds me of all those noghts in Alaska when I was younger.:cool:

IMHO. I wish the people on this forum could see it in person as we did at the club meeting. It is a truly outstanding piece of wood, turned to perfection. Great job Marc, thanks for posting.

Thanks for all the kind words. This is probably the most exciting piece of wood I have turned. I think it is gets to what hooked me in the first place. It's the beauty of the wood. What a privilege to enjoy it the way we can.

The creativity of this place never ceases to amaze a little box maker like myself. The center looks like a lake to me. :)

I'm usually not a fan of turquoise fill on woodturnings, but in this case it looks just right. Nice use of colors and the wood is spectacular. Great job.
