View Full Version : Green Maple HF

Every once in a while I like to experiment with color. This maple HF has plenty going for it already with voids, bark inclusions and curl, but I thought a little color would be interesting.

Maple, 5 ¼” diameter x 4 ½” high, sanded to 320 grit, colored with RIT ‘Kelly Green’ dye mixed with DNA, several coats of Minwax Wipe-On Gloss Poly. I will wait for a week or so for the finish to cure a little more and then buff.

Thanks for looking!

That's cool!! Is that the same dye they sell in the grocery store? I will soon have several gum pieces that will be ready for final turning. I think some of them could use some color. That would be inexpensive and it looks great. Thanks for posting it.

Definitely interesting but I think it works well, good color choice, mixes well with the brown inclusion.

Eugene - that is the very same RIT dye you find in stores. It is a clothing dye but works great on wood also - at least it has so far!

Steve that is a beautiful piece. Color and form are great. Steve what was your mixture of color to water or did you use DNA?

Steve, that's a great way to add some extra depth to the look of a piece. I bet it could really enhance a bland wood such as sycamore.

Bernie - just put about 1/4 teaspoon of RIT dye in a small plastic butter container and then added about 1/4 cup of DNA - stir - apply! No real science to it.

Steve,
You definitely hit it on the combination, color ,form ,and color.I would have never thought that green would work like it does. What ratio of dye to dna did you use? That really turned out great.

Delicious! Reminds me of a good crisp tart apple.

Great job. I've got to get into dying (that sounds kinda weird).

I just hate creative people with talent! I have no artistic ability but it looks great to me, form and color.

Steve,
Beautiful piece. I too like the contrast between the green color and the bark/voids. You have once again provided me with inspiration Kieran

The color looks very apple-like on my computer... Looks like there should be a worm coming out of that bark inclusion.
Seriously _ I like this... I've started playing with color, but don't even have green - maybe I'll get some.

Thanks Steve. Wasn't sure if you used water or DNA.

Beautiful piece Steve. Doesn't take much to go from a turning to art, which of course will bring a higher price. Well done.

These just get better and better. I did like the cherry red one better (probably because of the color), but the big inclusion on this is really cool.

Beautiful piece Steve. The color really makes the piece stand out and the added figure in the wood enhances the overall look. Ain't this fun!

Couldn't get this piece off my mind. Saw a form Cody posted on the red cedar thread. Turned a similar one and then thought about your green apple. Decided to try my hand at dying. Will post if not disgusting.

Steve, that is so neat! Thanks for letting see this and telling us how you did it. I have seen pictures of scroll sawn work dyed with Rit but it looked like paint and never really gave it a second thought. Hope you don't mind if I borrow your idea, its just to good to pass up!

Steve, This one reminds me of one a did a year or so ago, but mine was a bit taller and had a contrasting collar. Green is one of my favorite colors, because it relates to money!!! You have done your self proud again! Here is the one I did for your to remember.

Great work,

Jeff

Wow!! A matching pair. Both pieces are simply stunning. I'm a big fan of green too. Must be from having served in the Army for all those years. I think I like the Rit dye better than the SolarLux that I used. I might have to pick some up. Maybe I'll try purple.:D

I agree with George. A nice multiaxis worm would look cool coming out of the hole. Maybe some pink RIT?

Awsome, how long did you soak the wood in the dye?

Steve Schlumpf
05-18-2009, 4:14 PM
Gordon - Welcome to the Creek!

I used a 1" foam brush and kept applying the dye until the entire form had been saturated. Wiped off the excess and then let it dry. Real simple to do!
