I have an opportunity to buy an Amana leaf-edge router bit (54190) for about $16. It's brand new.

You can see what is does here http://www.amanatool.com/bits-fv/54190.html

Has anyone used this kind of router bit for a decorative trim on anything? Do you think its useful to purchase? I don't have a project in mind right now, but am interested in buying router bits for future use.

for $16 I'd buy it.

I've used this design bit along with a router jig to cut flutes on turned work while still mounted on the lathe, such as a bed post; the lathe's indexing feature lets you advance (rotate) the work in measured increments after each cut, and the bearings above and below the cutter allows you to follow a turned profile of varying diameters. A little sanding is required to smooth and refine the flutes, but I've never seen an easier method to do this tricky procedure.

I used a bit similar to this one for putting an edge on a small table. I'm sure it would see only rare use but I imagine most of us have bits that cost a lot more that have seen use either never or once.
