I was looking at Sorby Cabinetmaker`s Bench set or two Cherrys
What do you guy`s use or recommend? Thanks David R.

David,
Both of the brands you mentioned are good choices. I have the Sorby morticing chisels and 2 Cherries bech chisels. Of the two, I prefer the steel of the 2 Cherries. They hone razor sharp and hold an edge longer than the Sorbies. The finish on the 2 Cherries is also very nice (after you get the lacquer off the blades). The backs were flat and needed only a little honing. There are a lot of good chisels out there, but you can't go wrong with these.

Now, how about some hand planes to go with those chisels?

I know I have seen it before on the Pond, but could someone post the best source for obtaining a set of two cherries chisels? Also "approximately" what I should pay?

Also the website that explains the "scary sharp" method?

I am taking a hand cut dovetail class this summer, and I am trying to gear up.

I know this should probably go on the quiet side of the Creek, but the thread was already started in the noisy rapids.

Just tried to visit http://www.shavings.net/SCARY.HTM and got a 404 error. I wonder where it went.

Dieter Smchmidt @ Fine-Tools http://www.fine-tools.com (http://www.fine-tools.com /) traditionally has the cheapest prices, but you have to wait 2 to 3 weeks since they come from over-seas.
I got a gloat-able deal on mine at E-bay. The seller was Mikes Tools http://www.mikestools.com (http://www.mikestools.com/) . I think he is selling the 6 piece set for about $115 right now. A little more than Dieter, but you don't have to wait. You can also buy individual if you want to start with fewer, say a 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4".

An alternate place to find the full description of the "Scary Sharp" method of sharpening plane irons and chisels would be to go to fellow SMC member Rod Peterson's re-posting of the method.

Hope this helps,
Jason

This thread just cost me $131. I ordered a set of 6 chisels from Mikes Tools. When I started reading threads, this morning, I wasn't even thinking about chisels. I have a couple of Sorby mortising chisels and some Stanley Bench chisels. The stanley chisels are okay, but since I do carving, I recognize the joy of using a quality chisel. Please don't tell swmbo.....

While the 2-Cherries are nice chisels --- go on ebay and build youself up a set of Stanley 20 or 40 Everlasts or one of the other old steel chisels. They will cost 25-35$ apiece but will hold an edge like nothing made today in the same price range. Yeah they will also take a little work to flatten, reshape the bevel & sharpen but it will be worth it.. save an old tool..

My next choice would be Witherby's followed by Stanley 750's then any of the 20-30's chisels like Buck, Fulton, etc .... I try to avoid anything newer than postwar if I can.. the steel was better before

Thanks everyone, I'll check out the sites...

Sorry Stan, didn't mean to get you in trouble with SWMBO.

Another question...

Anyone know when Lie-Nielsen is coming out with their brand of chisels? They might give two cherries some competition!

Thomas Lie-Nielsen, can you enlighten us?

I have a 7 piece set of these that I am really happy with.

Got them last year from these folks.

Incredible steel for the price.
