Hi my name is Tom and I am a turnaholic....I now have a Jet 1442...Oneway Talon with #2, #3, Jumbo Jaws, and flat jaws. I was at PSI over the weekend and picked up a hunk of wood...no name and only $8. Thought it would be a good blank to turn...never would I have thought it would turn out this beautiful...I think it might be a walnut crotch but I thought it was too heavy to be walnut. anyway there was a ton of green and beautiful grain direction...sorry for the poor pictures but I was so excited when it was done that I had to take it right then.

Certainly a beautiful wood, not sure if it's walnut or not but that would be my guess. It looks a little to wild to be walnut but then again I don't really know what I'm talking about. What did you sand to and what was your finish?

Tom - congrats on your first bowl! We always recommend that you sign and date your first bowl and keep it so you can check back in a year or so and see how much your style has changed!

Tom, The bowl is great and the wood is very beautiful! It could be cocobolo or some type of rosewood may east indian. But not matter the grain and colors are very nice. Welcome and enjoy the SMC turners forum.

Very pretty. My first few bowls ended up in the scrap barrel.

Cheers,

Great looking first bowl Tom. I agree with Steve to sign, date and type of wood on the bottom and keep it. Compare it to where you are at in a year.

It is BEAUTIFUL!

If it's NOT Walnut, I'll bet it's cocobola. Looks somewhat like walnut with other colors and about 1.5 times as heavy as Walnut. In either case, $8.00, is a steal!

I sanded from 120 thru 12000 and finished with shellawax. Only had pen finishes laying around...got to read up on finishes...:D
