Well, just got home, I never did make it to Sacramento. too much wood in me truckhttp://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/eek.gif
This morning I got to werk at 6:00 worked till 11:30 then I went north to Lodi, got there at 1:30 and cut & loaded some big chunks of walnut for an hour while suckin down a couple cold ones, headed home about 2:30 and got back home about 5:20.
I hit the mother-lode of walnut. I gots me a bunch of burl and crotches that will make fine bowlshttp://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I got em from a brother of a friend of mine. First time I ever met him and he's a great guy, fired up the chainsaw after offerin me a beer:) Then got the forklift. let me choose which pieces I wanted and cut as needed to fit em in my truck.
I'll head back north to Sac to pick up the saw tomorrow and boy do I need it now!
John, I think you will understand why I didn't make it to pick up the saw when ya see the pics... I think I'll stop by Lodi tomorrow and fetch me some more on the way home from Sacramento. Ya want some? He want to get rid of it as its not suitable for firewood, too much work to get small enough pieces. I handed him $40 as I was leaving just as a token.

WOW - that's a lot of wood. Can't wait to see the finished product

Make that products.. Plural my friend:) Me either. I excite to say the least. I just hosed em all down to counter the drying from the ride home and I'll either have em cut up into five to seven inch slabs or seal em real well and let em sit till I get around to piecing em up and rough turning as soon as I finish my lathe. I have a friend near by that has a band saw mill that could handle them. I gotta call him, he's a bit particular about his mill and dosent like running wood that may have rocks and dirt that can mess up the blade (as you can guess they are pricey)

I just got a couple more pics.......uplading;)

Yeah Yeah, I know, I plan on picking up a 17" band saw tomorrow from a fellow member that I was supposed to pick up today.

I'm ready for the next pour of concrete but I need a few bits of hardware first so it will have to wait till Mondy evening or maybee Tuesday, meanwhile the headstock is just getting harder by the day:D

Thanks Bernie!! I am pleased with todays haul! I have plenty of oak on my proprerty I can harvest but walnut like this is harder to come by in these parts especialy considerin the price:)

I got a couple pics of the wood after rinsing it all down in the bed of my truck....

Congrats on your haul! Really some great looking wood! Would be nice if you had a trailer for your next trip! Would hate to see any of that stuff turn into fire wood! Looking forward to seeing some turnings before too long!

Mark Norman

It is some nice stuff and I hope to get more but this along with my local oak and manzanita should keep me busy for several months I would think.

I am still a noob at this Steve so be patient with me....some turnings will come I promise:) Another two or three weeks to finish the lathe and I'll be off and running. I have patience, ya got to when working with concrete;)

how far is Mariposa from Playa del Rey(by santa Monica) what's your address, and what times of the days will you not be home,

seriously though, this is where I hate that I simply can't get wood in my neck of the woods, that haul is just amazing and I am very envious

Mark Norman
05-10-2009, 12:11 AM
Yeah, John, It will be sealed tomorrow, All I have is latex, I cant seem to find anchorseal near me....can't find much of anything near me...lol
I'll have to get some on the net.
The checking is why I soaked it down and covered the load with a tarp till morning. If I seal it right away it wont be a problem.

hahaha, I had that one coming, thanx for your offer, man what I would give for some of that wood.
it is so frustrating not being able to score good wood ever, but maybe i just suck at re searching. i need to find the dump in malibu, topanga or palos verdes, there has to be some better wood that I can pick up.

amazing that you have this around, congrats

Wait a sec, something doesn't add up...you build this huge awesome lathe and you are cutting this wood with a chainsaw, thats not right, you should be mounting them as is :) Just kidding, looking good, lot of gnarly pieces. Digging it.

Mark Norman
05-10-2009, 9:57 AM
....and you are cutting this wood with a chainsaw, .
I had to fit it in the truck:confused: lol

Not to worry I have two pieces that will be mounted on the lathe as-is, One big burl and a round that is 17"D X 17"L. That wont happen till I build up some confidence in my abilities though.

Off to Sac soon to get the saw, I'll see if I can stop by Woodcraft there for some anchorseal.

Sascha,
Urban wood can be a good supply, next time you see a tree crew trimming trees just stop and ask if you can have some of the pieces, 90% of the time they will let ya take all ya want so they dont have to haul it away.

Nice ... very nice and it looks like you have enough to make a few pens.

Mark Norman
05-10-2009, 10:46 AM
Nope not guilty one little bit. I'm sharing the wealth with other members here:D:D

I just emptied the truck and am headed back for more. This time I go to Sac first for the saw and then fill up the rest of the space in the bed with more wood on the way home.
Gonna be a long day of driving for me again. Probably seven hours or so on the road...

I dare post pics of more:crazy: I'm feelin real lucky:D:eek:

Mark,
Do yourself a favor and get some anchorseal ASAP even if you have to pay good money for it. It is so much better than latex IMHO. Before you seal the wood, get rid of the cracks that will just get larger even if sealed as is.

If you use latex, thin it down to say less than 1/2 strength so it will penetrate a little. You can also use yelllow glue watered down to 1/4 strength to seal the end-grain. Multiple thin coats are better than one thick coat.

Make sure you put your stash in the shade and place a tarp over it to slow down the cracking once you get it sealed.

Good luck,
Dick

Stopped by Woodcraft and picked up two gallons of Anchorseal. Gonna have a beer and relax for a few then go out and seal em up then roll em in the shop.
I just got off the phone with my buddy that has the band sawmill, Gonna bring the biggest piece over to his place next Sunday and slice it up into 5 to 7 inch slabs so I can make round blanks with my new band saw. Then seal em again.
If it works outt well, I'll bring the rest of em over and slab then up as well (except for the two smallest pieces).

I just hosed em off again getting all the mud and rocks out of the nooks and crany's. I'll coat em with the anchorseal tomorrow, Can I or should I seal em with theanchorseal while they are still wet? I covered em all with a poly tarp for now..

Mark, I would say you will be busy for a while! I wish I was close by I would bring my saw to you and saw them up for a piece or two of that beautiful wood! I would not waste the Anchor seal on the ends right now, get it cut up and use it on the blanks, the old paint will work for the ends now, it is checked from sitting around for sometime already. I am going to get a walnut tree tomorrow morning and a huge oak burl next Saturday. The burl is a double trunk monster that another creeker Mike Svoma found while turkey hunting. We will post some pics when in the trailer!

Have fun,

Jeff

Too late Jeff, They be sealed now, besides thats what I got the anchorseal for anyways. Only used about a third of a gallon, the stuff is prety thin and covers well. Like I said I'll get em sliced up real soon and seal em as I cut em.

Man it's purdy stuff, can't wait to start cutting it up and makin stuff with it.

Mark Norman

My first experience with anchorseal and I must admit I am impressed. Looking at what I sealed up yesterday where the stuff has dried it looks like its sealed up but good!
I rolled the pieces around to get to the sides yet to be sealed so I could do so. I lathered it on good and so far have only used about 3/4 of a gallon. I got some pics so I could milk this gloat...It is worthy,,, I cant believe I was so lucky to come across this haul. I am blessed!

I am going to have trouble getting it back in the pickup to take it to my buddy with the mill but I will manage

Pics...just because...
I have numbered the pieces so I can keep track

#1 and #2 behind it:

I've got a nice piece of spalted, well figured walnut on the lathe right now. Been trying to make a spindle / candle stand out of it for about an hour. I still don't have the skew thing down quite right yet...

But my one or two little limbs pale in comparison to that haul. I mean really you might want to check out the springs on that poor truck!

Not sure about rifle stocks sizes. I could measure one up and let you know if you are that interested. Gonna be a while until white tail season opens anyway...

Mark Norman
05-13-2009, 12:20 AM
Yes David, I am serious about the rifle stock blank size. If these are big enough.. I am thinking along the lines of electric guitar bodies also. I know a guy that makes custom guitars, I'll have to look into that..

The ole pick-up is just fine I can assure you:)

I could only imagine what the shipping charges would be:eek:

I tell ya what though, For those here that want, I will make up some pen blanks with the cut-offs when the time comes. Free of charge, just pay shipping.

I am not into pen turning at all. I'll post a new thread when I have pieces to give away.

Mark,
With the lathe almost complete, I would think about turning a couple small table tops with one of them. A couple slices and you'd have bookmatched set. You will also want to go ahead and make you a captured Hollowing system while you are waiting on the lathe. Then you will be able to go straight into Hollow Forms with a lot of that Walnut. Seeing all that black walnut - Makes me wonder how far west I would have to travel to find some that looked that gorgeous. You got one helluva load there.:cool::cool:

Made some progress on the lathe tonight Brian....update coming... I have considered a few table tops... Maybe night stands held up with Manzanita crotches would be in order.
