Would like to acquire a couple of carbide scrapers. I have a way to make the handles and drill/mill the bar-holder , however have not found a source of the scrapers .
After some inquire, the carbide scraper inserts for milling steel are not sharp enough.

So...anybody know of a source for "sharp" carbide inserts (round or pear shaped) for a reasonable price. Need about a #10 screw hole in the middle.

Sandvik makes a round, drop, and triangle carbide insert for a handheld scraper, however don't know if they are sharp enough for woodturning.

Or...has anybody done this and am I wasting my time?

I have Shellix inserts on order from Grizzly. Haven't arrived yet so I can' report. I also have a set of round inserts from here (http://www.carbidedepot.com/wood-turning.htm). Again, they haven't arrived yet so no report.

I'm in the process of making an Oland style tool using a 3/8 HSS Co3 cutter that is so sharp that just handling it cut my finger. I should be done with this later today and will report back on it. Essentially, this can be viewed as a scraper.

If the 3/8 works, I'll try the next size up. The metal is very hard and is sharpenable with a standard white wheel. The trick is to find a cutter with a high percentage of cobalt.

Art, you will need a green wheel for sharpening carbide. A 6 " x 3/4" runs about 25$ , get a 100 grit or finer. I have been using carbide for years ( also metal turning) and you are correct most metal applications are cast inserts. Blanks can be sharpened but fine grit is requred and it helps if you have a jig to control the bit , punching holes in them is another thing , most done using EDM or if cast with the hole in place, there are some metal de-buring inserts that are VERY sharp and fairly low cost and the edge last for a while . check out " deburing" on google and you will see, also Rutland Tool supply cat # 52 pages 468-469 show deburring bits that work pretty good.there are limited carbide and lots of HSS in 3 basic shapes, square, triangle, round w/ holes. No finanical intrest in Rutland , as there severial makers of these ( Vargus, NOGA) also KBC tools, with most shapes under 5$ instead of the higher prices in the ww cats....PM if you need more info.
