Are replacement spindles pretty much universal or do you have to buy specific spindles for each brand of sander?

I'm not sure, Ken, if you mean the tubular sandpaper that fits on the spindle or the spindle itself. The sandpaper seems to be pretty standard - check the length and the diameter and you can generally find it.
The spindles themselves are probably unique to the machine.

Thanks Mike, I just didn't want to end up with one where the replacement sand paper things were hard to come by...

Just check what sizes are easily available (http://woodworker.com/cgi-bin/search.exe?search=drum+sander+abrasives&gclid=CNTY8e6UrZoCFRlcagodslMXdA)and make sure the machine you're looking at isn't "special". 2", 4", 4-1/2", 5, 5-1/2" and 6" lengths and 1/2" through 3" diameters are pretty common.

I found some spindle sandpaper on eBay at a pretty good price. Unless you use your sander a whole lot, a few of each grit lasts a long time.
