Howdy,

Well, I spent a grand total of 2 1/2 days over the last 2 weekends building a new corner computer workstation for my office using the Kreg jig. Man, what a cool invention!! I'm amazed how fast the cabinets went together. They sure do seem plenty strong as well.

The workstation is a big 'un. It's 28" deep, 130" long one way and 101" long the other. All the lower cases and face frames were constructed using only pocket screws. I used 6 sheets of 3/4" 'elcheapo Home Depot plywood and solid maple for the face frames and the trim.

The workstation consists of 4 seperate pieces. Here are the pieces mocked up in the shop.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/cws4.jpg">

The cabinet on the left is sized to house 3 - 2 drawer file cabinets.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/cws9.jpg">

The cabinet on the right also houses 3 - 2 drawer file cabinets. 2 on the left end and one on the right. This leaves a space in-between so this cabinet can double as a desk.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/cws7.jpg">

The center cabinet has a pull out for the keyboard that looks like a drawer when it's closed.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/cws2.jpg">

The drawer face flips down and a wrist pad will go on it after it's finished. I got this neat hardware from Rockler.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/cws8.jpg">

The upper cabinet houses the monitor in the lower hole and the printer in the upper hole. The shelves on the sides are adjustable. This cabinet is more traditional construction. It's all dadoes and rabbits.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/cws10.jpg">

Hopefully next weekend I can start getting some finish on it. No stain, just a few coats of poly should do the trick.

Thanks for looking,

Terry

Terry,
Outstanding work as usual. I'm still amazed at the combination of speed and quality in your work. Something like that would have taken me weeks.

Is this the plan from Wood Smith? It looks very similar to that plan, except for the upper cabinet. Looks great!!! I will make it a point not to show this to my wife... I am still working on the piece from Wood Smith ;)

Job well done. Are you going to ask the football team to move it?

Very nice job, Terry. I also love my Kreg jig...don't know what I'd do without it. (Of course I say that after spending this weekend building a cabinet for my sander without using it... :rolleyes: )

j,

Well all I can say is DUH!! :D I was truly amazed at the speed and strength of the pocket screw joints. I just whacked up all the pieces using the Exaktor and screwed them together. Amazingly fast and strong.

Looking excellent there Terry. Hey, the long one to the right could double as a bunk bed for Chris Padilla. Lol

Mark,

Thanks!! I always subscribe to the "keep it simple stupid" rule. Or, simple is as simple does. :D These pieces are super easy to build. ex: the backs of the pieces are just the remainder of the plywood after cutting the tops to size. Worked for me. Simple face frames and a bunch of glue and screws.

Secong thought, you could grab a couple of them Bessey's that has his name on them.!!!!:D
We'll have ol' Padilla all fixed up before He even sees this thread!!!:confused:

Terry, you always amaze me with the time spent vs. quality ratio of your projects! :eek: Two and half days would've probably netted me the hutch part and mayby, just maybe, getting the rest of the parts cut! :rolleyes: As usual, great job! :cool:

Excellent Terry, your quality is exquisite and consistent. A large corner computer desk is the first project on my list IF I ever get my shop finished, but I'm sure it won't be of the quality yours is.

John-Tony,

I wouldn't brag on the quality of theses pieces to much. Fine woodworking it is not. :D They are sturdy and functional. That's what I need for my office. All these pieces will be covered with office equipment and paperwork soon anyway. :)

Terry - they look alright from here!!!

How about a couple shots up underneath the tops, showing the screw holes and also the holes for the face frames. Are you going to (did you) fill the holes or just leave them?

I think if that were mine, I would put a coat of paint on it, THEN poly it. The poly would really make the paint come alive and be bold. Othewise, in a few years, you'll have a big amber desk.

Todd,

What????? Paint????? I picked thru an entire stack of crappy plywood at HD to get these 6 sheets!!!! I'll live with the amber desk. :D

Here are some construction pics.

This is a shot of the connection between the ends and the top. 5 screws total on each end. These will be hidden by the file cabinets. I'm not plugging any of these holes. They will all be hidden or on the back of the cabinets.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/cws11.jpg">

Here you can see the single pocket screw in the end of the rail of the face frame. I just glued and bradded the face frames on the carcass. I actually attached the stiles first and then just added the rails.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/cws12.jpg">

Here is the back of the short cabinet but all the backs are attached the same way. Just a few pocket screws around the edge. It really is amazing how strong this makes the cabinets.

Terry...very nice.....quite functional! My brother-in-law recently gave me a chinese-built Kreg clone to use when building doors for furniture. I've not had the chance to use it yet. You've certainly given me some ideas! :D

Love mine too. It really gets a workout on things that I never thought of using it on, until an idea lights my candle.

Terry...If you add another layer on the long side...I'll take the top bunk.

Greg,

Not sure about the top bunk, but we got lots of couch/floor space that you are welcome to.

Terry,

Great job! My Kreg Pocket Rocket jig is one of the best tool investments I ever made. I just finished a nightstand for my daugter and used it for all the joinery. It sure makes it easy!

Terry - I use my Kreg all the time. Simply love it!!! The computer table looks like it will last well into the distant future.

My question to you is - is your shop always that clean??? :) and if so, how in the world do you do that!!!

Thanks folks..........sorry I didn't see these new ones earlier. The thread is from August. :confused:

Betsy,

I'm a clean freak. Plain and simple. The shop is "my domain". There I can have it my way. :D

Dave,

The QS is going to be a A&C grandfather clock for the LOML's 20th anniversary!!!

Thanks for all you help with the wood.
