Can you ebonize mahogany the same way as you do cherry. I have to make a few shoji screens & they want them black but not painted. The whole house is mahogany so that's what the screens will be made from.

Black anyline dye will color any wood. I like the TransTint line, from Homestead Finishing.

Take a look at General Finishes Ebony dye stain. I used it once and was pleased with the results.

What I've used in the past that was very successful, was TransTint black followed by a black oil based stain. The dye alone leaves the wood a little grey, but it's a good base for the oil based stain.

I'd recommend that over the traditional method of soaking Rust in Acid till it dissolves , wiping that solution on the wood and then swiping the wood with tannic acid.
That method was developed long before they had Aniline dye.
