While cleaning out the upper level of the garage for my very own SHOP (yay)I found an old 12' x 8"x8" timber. I matches the posts in the basement of my 1903 home. There was also this 4x6x24 that has exactly the same grain orientation. When cut the pine aroma is really great, nearly over powering. But it is much harder than any other pine I have worked with. It's harder than poplar and almost as hard as red oak (the only two hard woods I have real experience with) I dampened part of it with some mineral spirits.

Can anyone hazard a guess what I've got here?

I always thought of fir as a soft wood, ya know christmas trees. Are there any applications it is particularly suited for?

Substitute that fir for any pine project you have in mind to take it's worth up 3X. With an oil and varnish finish, that is beautiful wood.

In older times, it was used for construction lumber. Is it superior to pine. Very good and stable structural lumber.
