Scored some maple through craigslist. Turned out it was already spalted! And full of critters, so I ripped off the bark before bringing it in. Any remaining worms will get the high-speed guillotine. It's fairly punky in places, but some nice colors in there. I'm assuming that I would want this to dry out fairly quickly to stave off rot? Should I anchorseal right away or wait a bit?

Maria - congrats on the wood - that is some really pretty stuff! If the wood is going punky on you - best advice would be to turn it asap because once the rot starts there is no stopping it.

I like your HF rough out! Looking forward to seeing the finished version!

Ditto all the above, and add my congrats, too!
If you turn one that is so punky it tears out really bad, soak it in a 50/50 mixture of lacquer and thinner. Overnight, let it cure, then finish turn. It works. :)
Happy turning!

Thanks for the kind comments everyone,
Guess I had better get slabbing and turning, my garage smells like mushrooms...and not in a good way. Have the hollow form soaking in DNA. Hopefully that will halt further rotting. Allen, good tip, will that work with shellac too? Some parts are going to need serious stabilizing of some sort!

I can't answer your question about drying. But have to say say that is some beautiful wood. Also your roughed out HF is very appealing.
