I would like to know how to identify the different gouges.
Roughing, bowl, spindle....... ?????

Is there a chart showing the configurations and angles of
lathe tools?

Thompson Lathe Tools (http://www.thompsonlathetools.com/default.asp) gives an excellent overview of the different turning tools.
He also makes FANTASTIC tools.

Norris - I think George gave you the best resource but Craft Supplies also has a section in each of their catalogs with a brief description of each different turning tool. They have their catalog on-line now - so it is easy to check out:
