I have a question for all UNION plane experts/semi-experts/users. Are all Union planes marked somewhere on the casting? I have a 5 ½ sized plane with a UNION marked lever cap and blade, and there is no way to deny the lineage of the frog and lateral lever, definitely UNION. But I see nothing on the main body casting. It still needs cleaning, and perhaps I will find some markings, but right now nothing is very apparent. What do you have on your UNION planes? Thanks.

The main casting behind the rear tote is marked
with 'UNION' (curved) above 'No. 5'.

Ray,
I have a Union No7 that was missing the original lever cap (had one from a Transitional in it's place) and had no other markings to indicate that it was indeed a Union Hand Plane. A bunch of the fine folks here helped me out with the ID. The only way they had a clue who made it was from the design of the lateral lever and the markings/shape of the frog. You gotta' love the knowledge base the internet provides!

My addition to this is some union planes have a unique adjuster than the Bailey style adjuster.

Also, the totes and knobs were made of mahogany instead of rose wood. The knob had a bead around the base.
